Happy Three Kings Day!

Happy Three Kings Day!
5 Jan

Tomorrow, Three Kings Day, marks the close of the Christmas season in many Spanish-speaking cultures. This holiday, also known as Epiphany, commemorates the arrival of the Three Kings in Bethlehem to worship the newborn Jesus. The celebration varies in different regions, but a common tradition is to exchange gifts and enjoy a delicious Rosca de Reyes.

In many homes, families gather to share special moments and continue the magic of the Christmas season. The night before Three Kings Day, it is common for children to place their shoes by the door or in a special place in the house, awaiting the visit of the three wise men: Melchior, Gaspar and Balthazar. It is believed that these wise men will leave gifts and sweets for the little ones, as long as they have been good during the year.

One of the most characteristic elements of the celebration is the Rosca de Reyes, a delicious sweet bread decorated with crystallised fruits that simulate the crown jewels. Inside the donut, a figurine representing the Christ Child is usually placed. Those who find the figurine in their portion of rosca should organise the celebration of Día de la Candelaria on 2 February, a tradition that involves sharing tamales and atole with friends and family.

Another popular activity during Three Kings Day is the making and participation in the "Roscón de Reyes". This is a kind of game that consists of hiding a surprise inside the rosca. Whoever finds the surprise becomes the "King" or "Queen" of the day and often receives a small gift or the responsibility of organising the next celebration.

All in all, Three Kings Day is a holiday full of tradition, joy and shared family moments. As the Christmas lights fade, this celebration provides a festive closure before the daily routine resumes its course.
