The magic of San Juan: bonfires, sea and tradition on Alicante's beaches

The Bonfires of San Juan are Alicante's big festival, declared to be of International Tourist Interest. It is held every year from 20 to 24 June, although the festive atmosphere begins days before. It is a tribute to fire and the sun, to welcome the summer.

What do you do at the festival?

Bonfires are planted

They are large figures made of cardboard, wood and cork, full of colour and humour. Many of them ironically criticise current affairs. There are more than 180 bonfires spread throughout the city.

Mascletàs

Every midday, the sky thunders with the sounds of gunpowder in the Plaza de los Luceros. People gather to feel the rhythm of the fire.

Parades and parades

The streets are filled with music, traditional costumes, bands and comparsas. One of the most beautiful parades is the International Folklore Parade, with groups from different countries.

Bonfires on the beach

People build small bonfires and bonfires in the sand. Around the fire people sing, dance and enjoy themselves with friends and family. It is typical to jump over the bonfires (usually seven times) as a symbol of good luck and purification.

Midnight swim

Many take the opportunity to take a dip in the sea just after midnight. It is believed that the water that night has a special power to cleanse bad energies and bring good wishes.

A unique atmosphere

The beaches are illuminated by the glow of bonfires, fireworks and moonlight. The sound of the waves and the smell of gunpowder create a magical atmosphere that is hard to forget.

Fireworks and the cremà

On the night of 24th June everything ends with the cremà: the bonfires are burnt in a great spectacle of fire and light. Afterwards, for several days, fireworks are set off on the Postiguet beach.

All in all, the fiestas of San Juan are beautiful. Besides, you can meet new friends. It is an unforgettable experience.
